Bourbon is a straight whiskey (note U.S. spelling) distilled from a mash having at least 51% corn in addition to malt and rye. It originated in the mid 19th century and is named after Bourbon County, Kentucky where it was first made.
We tasted the following two bourbons: Woodford Reserve and Booker’s True Barrel Bourbon. For those with an interest in sampling them, the following are our tasting notes:
Woodford Reserve
· distillery dates back to 1812
· 90.4 proof
· sweet caramel nose
· very smooth
· sweeter than most scotches
· you can feel the heat – but no burn
· most liked it best neat – with no water
· a Very Pleasant drink
· $50 in BC
· a definite buy!
Booker’s True Barrel Bourbon
· 121 to 127 proof
· only bourbon bottled “straight-from-the-barrel”, uncut and unfiltered
· aged 6 to 8 years
· has more of a scotch nose
· long after burn – a little overwhelmed by the high alcohol content
· smoother with a little water, but still has lots of kick
· $55 in BC
· a little too much alcohol for most in our group
