Out &About: Bus Field Trip – Island Timberland

Do You Know What Island Timberlands Does?

Well, 48 Northwest Bay PROBUS members do now!

That’s how many of us put on forest safety gear: orange helmets and vests, before heading into the Arrowsmith hinterlands to explore Island Timberlands local domain.

Makenzie Leine, Manager of Community and Government Relations with I.T., entertained members with many forestry facts as we headed on the bus to our first stop to observe harvesting. The trees had been cut and stacked near the road. We watched the ballet of pickers load up to 40 tons of logs onto trucks. These, in turn, head down the road to the Dry Sort area where we later saw a huge array and size of loading equipment scuttling around, moving logs, grading and sorting them, before being bound into groups for the drop into the ocean where they are formed into booms and shipped around the world. Another stop showed us how drones are used in field survey work and how the silviculture and reforestation components work to complete the circle of farming trees.

As a private company, Island Timberlands is committed to sustainably managed forests and being good corporate citizens. We all experienced PR in action and very committed employees to their forestry careers. Overall, a great day in the woods was had by all.
