Sail to the Symphony June 2026

What a splendid day we had!

The weather was a little cool in the morning while waiting for the ferry, but rose to a comfortable temperature with lots of sun. The ferry ride was most comfortable for both crossings for those of us who are not great sailors. Several of us sat in the area where we were serenaded by some of the students attending the Pacific Region International Summer Music Association, better known as the PRISMA Festival.

We were lucky enough to be ferried to and from the festival venue by a comfortable inter-city bus rather than a school bus. Such luxury! The buffet lunch was very good.

In the first half of the program, the orchestra played Johannes Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Cello in A Minor, Op. 102 (1887). It was stunning. What was particularly remarkable was that the featured violinist fell ill very suddenly and had to leave the festival. A second violinist volunteered to take her place at the last minute. Incredible that somebody could do that and play so flawlessly!

In the second half, we heard Hector Belioz’s Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14 (1830). It was a very moving and fascinating piece, triggered by the composer’s love-sick opium overdose. Both pieces received extended standing ovations.

As always, PRISMA organized everything perfectly from the first email inviting Probus Clubs to come to the event to the last note played at the concert. It was an absolute pleasure dealing with them and I will happily organize the group again next spring.
