Report on October Speaker: Dr. Dick Beamish, “A Bigger Picture of Pacific Salmon”

Among the many gifts that Probus members enjoy is the impressive list of speakers who, without payment of any kind, generously share their knowledge and experience with us.  Our October speaker was no exception.  Dr. Dick Beamish is an international scientist and expert on Pacific fishes.  In a short powerful presentation focusing on chum, pink and sockeye salmon, Dick showed us the world picture of these fishes; the wild swings in numbers and pointed out the contributing factors and future trends. This is information that every planetary citizen needs to know as we consider our responsibilities to future generations.

Dr. Beamish has also just published an important book called Fishes of the Strait of Georgia.  All of the proceeds from this beautiful hardcover book go to two non-profit organizations that work to protect both salmon and the environment.  They are the Pacific Salmon Foundation and The Rainforest Foundation.

The Rainforest Foundation is located at  https://www.raincoast.org/
The Pacific Salmon Foundation is located at https://psf.ca/

More good news – Dick has offered to return with a sequel on coho, chinook and steelhead.
