Clayoquot Days — Annual Victoria Day spring garden show and open island event — May 19-21, 2017

Venturing to the wild west coast, twenty-three Northwest Bay Probus members converged in the Tofino area to attend a special once-a-year chance to visit Clayoquot Island Preserve on Stubbs Island, which is privately owned and normally closed to the public.

After a quick ten-minute boat ride over the Stubbs Island, we were greeted by Sharon Whalen, the head gardener, and members of the Nature Conservancy of Canada. We learned about the history of the island and current conservation activities. Armed with a map and a species and ecosystem checklist we set off to explore the lush rainforest, sand dunes, beaches and gardens of the Clayoquot Island Preserve, followed by a picnic lunch.

What a unique experience, and a great way to spend a beautiful sunny afternoon with good friends!
