On November 25th, eleven Probus members, led by Steph Smith, enjoyed good old pub fare at the Black Goose and then on to the Robert Held Glass Gallery in Parksville for a tour and glass-blowing demonstration. Unfortunately Robert himself had to make an essential trip to the dentist; nevertheless, we were treated to a fascinating half-hour by his knowledgeable second-in-command, Dona, who took us step-by-step through the glass-blowing process as we watched it being transformed from its raw state into exquisite Christmas ornaments and glass plates. Dona trustingly allowed us to handle and pass some of the items to each other. She then went on to show us some of Held’s unique pieces such as a bowl he had created specially for Queen Elizabeth II. Needless to say, we weren’t allowed to handle these priceless pieces (!) but we now understood why this very talented man, who lives in our midst, is world-famous and why his work is sold all over the world.
As this was such a popular event, we can easily see it being organized for at least one, maybe two more Out–and-About excursions. Only 12 people can be accommodated at a time. Stay tuned…
