Many are not aware of a hidden gem nestled in a bay, a short drive north of Nanoose.
I am talking about the VIU Marine Field Station at Deep Bay, visited by twenty of us on May 14, 2025.
We were welcomed by a small group of passionate researchers who, amongst other things, strive to reduce threats to whales and boaters; campaign to reduce marine debris; research humpback and Minke Whales ( not to mention numerous species of oysters); and conduct year-round survey on cetacean species.
The tour was provided exclusively to our Probus Club, but as of Saturday, May 17, the facility is open to the public for the summer and fall. The very reasonable cost of admission goes to support the science underway at the Field Station.
Let’s let Don Dempson’s pictures tell the rest of the story.
